Master of Science in Physics
Starting in the winter semester 2012/2013, The Department of Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light will offer
a Master of Science Degree Program in Physics taught in English.
The Program addresses all holders of a Bachelor of Science degree in physics, foreign as well as German students, who would like to study in an international environment.

This lecture gives an overview about the mosts important methods for statistically correct data analysis in physics. It is meant to deepen the knowledge on statistical techniques already used in lab courses, and will provide the necessary equipment for Bachelor, Master and PhD theses in experimental physics. In studying the various techniques we will focus on an intuitive understanding of the concepts behind statistical data evaluation. Statistics and probability calculus are deeply connected. Therefore, the first part of the lectures will concentrate on the meaning of probability and probability distributions. The 2nd part is about measurement errors and error propagation, followed by more complicated topics like parameter estimation ("fits"), hypothesis tests ("how confident am I about the interpretation of a measurement") and confidence intervals. If there is time left, we will briefly discuss deconvolution techniques and machine learning tools.
The exercises will often deal with programming small scripts using the ROOT analysis framework, which is C++ based. This is an ideal opportunity to learn about small data analysis projects before starting with a Bachelor or Master project.
More information is available from StudOn .

Basic course in Optics II: Wave and Fourier optics -
- Dozentinnen/Dozenten:
- Gerd Häusler, Svenja Ettl
- Angaben:
- Vorlesung, 2 SWS, ECTS: 5, nur Fachstudium, PW A
- Termine:
- Di, 9:00 - 10:30, SR 00.103
Eine Anmeldung ist erwünscht.
- Studienrichtungen / Studienfächer:
- WF Ph-BA ab 4
WF Ph-MA 1
- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
- The course is suitable for 4th or higher semester Natural Scientists and Engineers, particularly for the Physics Module as part of the Bachelor or Master studies of Physics.
- Inhalt:
- The lecture deals with light as information carrier.
The following questions are particularly interesting in this context:
How can the information be transmitted?
How is the information encoded and decoded?
Where are the physical limits?
What are the information-theoretical and technical „costs“?
As tools serve in this context:
the wave equation
linear system theory
Fourier analysis
information theory
Practical aspects are:
How can images be specifically modified and also processed afterwards?
Noise reduction
optical sensors reaching the physical limits
interferometry, holography
