- Contents:
- Intellectual Properties (IPs) in general and especially patents play an important role in innovation in any Hightech society. This topic is multi-faceted and can be accessed from different viewpoints: business, politics, legal framework, organization, etc. In this course, we will focus on:
the introduction to IPs and patents in general,
the role of IPs and patents in research, development and (open) innovation,
the patent exploitation through licensing contracts and patent pools,
the patent policies in the European Union, China and USA.
Learning objectives and skills
The students:
• learn to understand the role of patenting in the innovation process,
• gain deeper insights into the roles of IP in various types of businesses,
• study the differences of IP and patents in different regions and contexts (Asia, United States, Europe).

In the second half of the semester, students can acquire bonus points in a project.

The content of the course "Advanced Process Management" is about strategic business process planning and business IT alignment. Additionally, it covers business process analysis, planning, engineering, monitoring and controlling. Furthermore it provides a comprehensive understanding of workflow management systems, service-oriented architectures, intelligent agents and assistans as well as process portals.
Goals:
You learn the fundamental objectives and concepts of business process management. We discuss the meaning and instruments of strategic business process management. We introduce the entire business process management life cycle. During the exercises, you will apply this knowledge to practice-oriented cases.

- Contents:
- The class covers social and technological aspects of innovation technologies.
As a future core technology, the semantic web will serve as a basis for linking different types of technologies across the boundaries of socio-technical systems. The lecture will thus explore social, organizational theory and technical concepts around a semantic web as an innovation technology.
Social and organizational theory will amongst others contain:
Systems theory, semiotics and communication theory,
Basics of open innovation, open research, interactive value creation and open evaluation,
Legal and societal aspects,
Aspects regarding organizational knowledge creation (e.g. sensemaking, practicing, frames of reference)
The technological aspect of the class will deal with:
Theory, Infrastructure and underlying technologies of the world wide web from web 1.0 to web 3.0
Web scripting and markup languages and associated design theory (e.g.: PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, XML, OWL, RDF, RDFa, CSS)
Thematic problems within publishing, filtering & selection and quality control
