Contents
This seminar looks at conceptions of Britain and Britishness in Black cultural productions in the 20th and 21st century. Covering a range of cultural representations - in literature, television, or music - we will enquire into how Black (a term that will be defined) writers and artists have represented and (re)written British culture and history and conceived of the complexity of Black British identity. We will focus on issues like race, gender, class, home and exile, diaspora, the historical trauma of slavery, coming of age, generational differences, and the politics of representation. Our material comprises novels by Samuel Selvon, Hanif Kureishi, and Bernadine Evaristo, as well as selected other texts of different media and genre, such as film, series, or music. We will also regard the aesthetic diversity of these texts and their engagement with the politics of canon formation.

Please purchase and read the following texts:
  • Samuel Selvon, Moses Ascending [Penguin Modern Classics edition]

  • Hanif Kureishi, The Buddha of Suburbia [faber and faber edition]
