- This seminar accompanies the Hauptseminar English Historical Sociolinguistics and is designed to give
students a deeper understanding of how historical sociolinguistic research is undertaken by looking at
specific studies in the field.
This class is comprised of two parts. In the first half of the semester we will read and discuss some of
the foundational studies in historical sociolinguistics, with a focus on research design and methodology.
In the second half of the course you will put this into practice by building a mini-corpus of eighteenth-century
letters. Using digital images of unedited documents, you will learn how to transcribe the letters with
TEI XML mark-up.
