- Inhalt
- Populism is the political buzzword of our era. The concept has become crucial to understand current debates about politics around the world, from radical parties in Europe to left-wing presidents in Latin America, to the rise of the Tea Party, and, inevitably, to Donald Trump’s presidency. Populism is, however, also one of the most contested concepts in the social sciences. This seminar will provide an introduction to populism in the United States. We will define the concept and examine the different phases of populism in the US, from the emergence of the People’s Party to the turbulent 2016 election with the campaigns of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. We will read key texts (both historical and contemporary) about the movements and their leaders, as well as on the concept itself. Throughout this course, we will analyze cultural products reflecting American political culture, as style and rhetoric are crucial for its emergence and lasting impact.
