Contents
"The Sixties" have been labeled the turbulent decade because of complex cultural and political shifts and transitions against the backdrop of Cold War culture and politics. In the U.S. the decade is marked by protest movements ranging from the African-American Civil Rights Movement, the American Indian Movement, feminism and Gay Liberation Movement, to the Anti-Vietnam War Movement and by countercultural phenomena and projects that emerged from an anti-establishment social dynamic such as communes, hippies, drug culture, to name just a few. In this seminar we will analyze a variety of cultural products (factographic and fictional texts, music, film, documentaries) and discuss diverging contemporary evaluations of that famous decade. Please buy and read Ann Charters, ed., The Portable Sixties Reader (Penguin) and Richard Brautigan, In Watermelon Sugar (Vintage).
