- Contents
- Disgust has accompanied humankind throughout history as an early warning system, cautioning against spoiled food, disease and other potential sources of danger. Disgust, however, has also been functionalised to regulate social behaviour, to define what is normal and to declare what is to be shunned at all costs. In this seminar we will therefore explore the boundaries of disgust and its transgressive potential manifesting in the concept of the abject, exploring sites such as sexuality, the body and the self. Reading will include J. G. Ballard’s Crash, Ian McEwan’s First Love, Last Rites, Will Self’s My Idea of Fun and various short texts. To branch out into the audio-visual realm we are also going to watch David Lynch’s Eraserhead and David Cronenberg’s The Fly. Please be aware of that fact that most of these texts contain rather graphic depictions which might be perceived as disturbing.
