Prerequisites / Organisational information
Das Praktikum wendet sich an Studenten aus den Studiengängen EEI, IuK, WIng, ASC, CME und CE, die die Vorlesung Image and Video Compression (IVC) im gleichen Semester hören oder bereits gehört haben. Das in der Vorlesung erworbene theoretische Wissen wird dabei praktisch angewendet und dadurch zusätzlich vertieft.

Contents
Der Schwerpunkt des Praktikums liegt auf Videocodierverfahren. Im Laufe des Praktikums erstellt jede Gruppe einen Video-Codec und untersucht dessen Eigenschaften. Kenntnisse in MATLAB sind hilfreich, aber nicht Voraussetzung.

Versuche

Das Praktikum besteht aus vier Teilen.
Teil 1: Einführung in MATLAB
Teil 2: Verarbeitungsblöcke in Videocodern (Quantisierung, Entropiecodierung, Transformation, Bewegungsschätzung)
Teil 3: Integration der einzelnen Verarbeitungsblöcke in eine Verarbeitungskette und Implementierung optionaler Methoden
Teil 4: Subjektiver Vergleich und Analyse

Der Inhalt dieses Praktikums ist eng verbunden mit den Inhalten der Vorlesung Image and Video Compression (IVC).

Lab Course Image and Video Compression

Prerequisites
The lab course addresses students from the field of study in EEI, IuK, WIng, ASC, CME, and CE, who participate in the lecture Image and Video Compression in the current summer semester or who have already attended the lecture before. The theory from the lecture can practically be applied during this lab course, which helps to intensify the gained knowledge about video coding.
Similar to 2020, we plan to hold the lab completely virtual due to the current COVID situation. The students will work on their own and can login on the remote lab computers via X2Go. Supervision will be offered with breakout rooms in Zoom by the tutors. If the situation allows face-to-face sessions again, the lab course might be held as usual at the chair’s computer laboratory.

Contents
The lab course focuses on video coding methods. During the lab course, each group will implement its own video codec and evaluate its properties. Knowledge in MATLAB is helpful but not required.

Structure
The lab course consists of four main parts:
Part 1: Introduction to MATLAB
Part 2: Processing blocks in video codecs (quantization, entropy coding, transformation, motion estimation)
Part 3: Integration of the blocks into a video codec pipeline and implementation of optional methods
Part 4: Subjective evaluation and analysis
