Contents
Content: The lecture and exercise ‘Electrochemical Energy Applications’, deals with electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells, batteries or electrolysis cells that are promising for the global energy transition. The content of the lecture encompasses: thermodynamic and kinetic properties of electrochemical devices, as well as a review of electrochemical characterization techniques of electrochemical cells. Next, different systems like fuel cells, electrolyzers and batteries are thoroughly reviewed in terms of functioning, materials and a basic economic assessment of their applicability. While in the lecture basic knowledge is imparted, different tasks are fulfilled in the exercise to deepen an understanding of the underlying principles of the topics covered in the lecture. Student competencies achieved (lecture):
  • Understand the basic functioning of electrochemical energy applications.

  • Acquire an understanding of the relevance of electrochemical systems.

  • Interpret data from electrochemical measurements.

  • Critically read literature in the field.

Student competencies achieved (exercise):

  • Being able to transfer basic electrochemical effects to different electrochemical systems.

  • Being able to propose simple strategies for the improvement of electrochemical systems.

  • Understand the importance of electrochemical technologies in various fields.
