Most people think of emotions as purely internal experiences, composed solely of psychological elements. However, they are actually deeply social. They are embedded in, constitutive of, and created by social interactions, social structures, and institutions. This course examines the field of research in the sociology of emotions from a constructivist and interactionist perspective. Topics we will focus on include: the expression and experience of emotions, emotions in social interaction, (collective) identity and emotions, the cross-cultural study of emotions, and the traditions of theory and research in the sociology of emotions.

The course will take the form of weekly ZOOM meetings and will be taught in English. Dial-in information will be provided to all who are registered through meinCampus prior to the first session.
