- Systems of difference equations and of ordinary differential equations
Existence and uniqueness of solutions, steady-state solutions, linear stability analysis
Qualitative behavior and phase plane analysis
Discrete and continuous models for interacting populations (predator-pray models, competition models, mutualism and symbiosis)
Epidemic models and the dynamics of infectious diseases
Reaction kinetics (mass-action, enzyme kinetics)
Regulation mechanisms in biological systems
Excitable systems and dynamic behavior of neuronal membranes
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students are able to
analyse and simulate systems of ordinary differential equations
possess profound knowledge in the area of mathematical modelling of processes in biology
recognise the most important underlying mechanisms in biochemical and biophysical systems and give quantitative descriptions
acquire problem-oriented learning stategies and improve their skills in interdisciplinary approaches
