Inhalt:

The notion Internet of Things (IoT) describes the ever increasing interconnection between “intelligent” or “smart” real world objects. That is, everyday objects and machines are equipped with embedded processors, sensors and an IP-interface, which enables them to jointly perform tasks in a more efficient and convenient manner than if each device acted independently. For instance, smart home appliances can coordinate their activity periods to avoid power-consumption surges.
These efficiency gains have a flip side, namely that such smart objects might become susceptible to remote attacks by hackers or malware, if no appropriate countermeasures are employed. Thus cryptographic solutions fit for this context are needed, that on one hand side provide security but on the other are efficient enough to be deployed on such devices. This seminar will cover cryptographic techniques that were developed for this scenario such as

  • Identity-based encryption

  • hierarchical identity-based encryption

  • identity-based signatures

  • cryptographic primitives with low power requirements

The seminar will cover both constructions and use-cases.

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The students will acquire basic knowledge of the notion of identity-based encryption and how it is used. They will develop an understanding of how security guarantees for advanced notions of public key encryption can be modelled and defined. They will be able to identify scenarios in which this primitive and related primitives provide advantages over other techniques.
