Inhalt
Although there are no special pre-requirements for this course, due to the nature of the topic and selected examples, course is more suitable for students with basic background
in thermodynamic and fluid mechanic followed by higher interests in topics related to energy, efficiency, combustion systems, energy transformation, boilers and heating systems, pollutant reduction, etc.
Goal of the course is to explain how some basic chemical, thermodynamic and fluid mechanic phenomena are used in engineering for practical conventional and state-of-art applications.
As an example, course follows a life cycle of single oil droplet starting with its extraction from the earth and ending in the combustion chamber of household heating system.
By following oil droplet on its way toward the final use, course is introducing different energy transformations and explains different physical phenomena and technical solutions used
in each phase of an oil droplet life cycle. In this way, course discusses topics like:
  • world-wide and local trends in energy production,

  • production of different fractions of liquid fossil fuels,

  • spray formation mechanisms and applied technical solutions,

  • evaporation process and novel evaporation techniques,

  • conventional and novel combustion technologies,

  • environmental impact and pollutant emissions,

  • household heating systems and its components, etc.

Within the course principles of operations for different parts of conventional household heating systems are explained including related basic physical phenomena.
Apart from conventional systems, students are introduced to some state-of-art solutions like cool-flame or combustion within porous inert media.
Part of the course lectures is followed by exercises and practical laboratory demonstrations. Students are instructed

  • to improve their knowledge on world-wide and local energy trends,

  • to get overview of complexity of energy efficient, low pollutant use of fossil fuels today,

  • to learn more about some practical use of basic chemical, thermodynamic and fluid mechanic phenomena,

  • to get insight in some state-of-art concepts related to efficient use of gas/liquid fossil fuels,

  • to experience practical demonstrations of different conventional and novel combustion techniques and learn about their advantages and disadvantages.
