- Entry requirements: placement test result "Level 4" OR at least one course on Level 3 passed.
Please register for this class through OKTIS. To receive a certificate, students are expected to participate regularly and actively and write a seminar paper (approximately 10 pages) This seminar is part of “Basismoduls Propädeutik (Pol 1),“ which is obligatory for the 1st semester. This seminar can also be completed by students from different subject areas as part of “English for Academic and Special Purposes;” it counts as “Level 4” class.

Since women in the U.S. in principle obtained the right to vote in 1919 with the passage of the 19th Amendment, they have been a (slowly) growing force in American politics. On January 4, 2007, John Boehner handed over the Speaker of the House gavel to Nancy Pelosi, making her the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives and therefore 3rd in line to the presidency – the closest any woman had ever gotten. The 2020 election shattered another of the few remaining glass ceilings in American politics by making Kamala Harris the first female Vice President of the United States. This seminar explores the strategies women have employed to rise through the ranks of American politics, how they are perceived by both the American public and their male colleagues in the echelons of political power, and how female leadership might differ from male political leadership. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, when asked when there will be enough women on the Supreme Court, replied, “When there are nine.” In that vein, this seminar will also ask the question whether America might be ready to seriously consider a female president in 2024.Es wird empfohlen, im Zuge des Studiums einer Fremdsprache einmal die Übung "Kickstart: Fremdsprachen lernen" (auf UNIVIS unter Sprachenzentrum > Sprachbezogene Zusatzqualifikationen in Erlangen) zu besuchen
