Contents
The romance is a highly complex literary genre. And it is a typically American genre. There are many differences between the romance and the (European) novel. In the “Custom-House Preface” in The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne tries to specify the main characteristics of the romance. He underlines, for instance, that the romance also depicts supernatural events. In this course, we will discuss the historical development of the American romance. Furthermore, we will seek to clarify why this genre still seems attractive in the 21st century. We will read the following romances:

Charles Brockden Brown, Wieland, or, The Transformation
James Fenimore Cooper, The Last of the Mohicans
Nathaniel Hawthorne, The House of the Seven Gables
