- Fashion is a topic that is hardly ever mentioned when one discusses American literature. In this seminar, we will not only concentrate on the role and depiction of fashion in various literary texts, but we will also talk about the complexity of the term “glamour” and worry about the fate of the American dandy (or whether there has ever existed such a thing as the “American dandy” in the first place). Combining fashion studies and literary studies, we will analyze the historical changes in the representation of fashion in American literature. In addition to texts in the fields of fashion studies and popular culture studies, we will read the following novels:
