- Inhalt
- In this seminar we will get an overview over key moments in the Victorian era. To this end, we will study nineteenth-century literature and culture by analysing novels, periodicals, and advertisements. Theories and questions of gender, class, imperialism, materialism, and consumerism will accompany our discussions of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847), Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret (1862), George Gissing’s The Odd Women (1893) and Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). We will further consider contemporary articles of the periodical press, advertisements, and excerpts from Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) as well as Dracula (1897). Our discussions will include contemporary myths and ideological projects, questions of space and power as well as characteristic ‘figures’ of the nineteenth century (e.g., The Angel of the House, The Governess, The New Woman, The Dandy, The Shop Girl…).
Due to the pandemic this course will take place online. Please prepare the reading in advance.
