Contents
For quite a long time Ian McEwan has been regarded as the enfant terrible of contemporary English literature. As a young writer he shocked his audience by breaking taboos and by writing about sexuality and violence, meanwhile he belongs to the small circle of the most prestigious British writers. This lecture intends to study the many facets of McEwan's literary work. After analysing some of his early short stories we will concentrate on some of his most important novels: The Cement Garden (1978), The Comfort of Strangers (1981), The Child in Time (1987), Black Dogs (1992), Enduring Love (1997), Amsterdam (1998), Atonement (2001), Saturday (2005), Solar (2010), and The Children Act (2014). We will discuss McEwan's treatment of history, politics, religion and science. Our main focus will lie on the analysis of ethical problems in McEwan's novels.
