The Department for Computer Science 9 (Computer Graphics) works on the generation and manipulation of synthetic images, virtual worlds and computer animations with the help of computers. This comprises methods for generating suitable models of a scene (geometric modeling), methods for displaying such scenes (image synthesis, rendering) as well as processing large data sets with the aim of visualizing the information content (scientific visualization).

Focus of research

The research of the LGDV is divided into three areas:

Geometric Modeling

  • surface reconstruction

  • quality control

  • subdivision methods

  • 3D grid management

  • matching

  • hierarchical methods, variational methods

Image Synthesis

  • image based methods, light fields

  • point based rendering

  • image synthesis in virtual reality applications

  • global illumination and shadow computation

  • ray tracing

  • distributed and parallel rendering

Visualization

  • medical visualization

  • registration and segmentation of tomographic data

  • integration of simulation and visualization

  • interactive visualization of 3D data

  • flow visualization

  • virtual reality

These main research areas are not independent of each other, since one thing gives rise to the other.

Research-relevant technical equipment

  • PC cluster (4 Dual Xeon nodes)
  • SGI Onyx2 (Infinite Reality 2, 2 Mips R10000 CPUs)

  • stereoscopic backprojection including tracking

Cooperation partners

We are closely cooperating with several companies. Among them are

  • ATI Technologies Inc., Ontario, Canada

  • BMW AG, Munich

  • EADS Germany GmbH, Munich

  • Fraunhofer Institute (IIS and IZFP), Erlangen, Fürth

  • NVIDIA Corporation, California, USA

  • Rupp + Hubrach KG, Bamberg

  • Siemens AG, UB Medical Solutions, Erlangen

  • Siemens AG, UB Automatics and Drives, Erlangen
