Dear students,We warmly welcome you to the 2020/21 winter term! Information concerning course teaching in view of Corona:
Up-to-date information on how the corona virus affects teaching activities at FAU can be found on the FAU website. Information on teaching organisation within the Physics department is available from our study information pages. Online application for our English-spoken master programs: please follow this link.
For further information in the application process, follow the above link. Information on courses taught in English is collected under the English headings of the master programs.
Additional courses can be found under "Elective Courses" and "Seminars". If you are interested in an elective course which is offered in German only, you may contact the lecturer and ask whether the course may be offered in English. General information concerning the Department of Physics and its study programs can be found on the website of the department. MSc Physics und MSc Materials Physics: on Monday, November 2 at 12:00 CET we will hold a virtual welcome reception.
Besides the informal get-together we will provide some information on the Master's program and offer the opportunity to ask questions. Here is the Zoom link to the event:

Master of Science in Physics
To complete the master's program you need to obtain 120 ECTS credit points within 4 semesters. This period can be extended by up to 2 semesters.
The obligatory requirements are
at least one advanced theory course (TV, 10 ECTS)
at least one advanced experimental course (EV, 10 ECTS)
two advanced lab or computational physics courses (WP, 10 ECTS)
a physics seminar (PS, 5 ECTS)
elective courses (PW or NW) with a total of at least 15 ECTS (of these at least 5 ECTS from PW)
a one-year research period comprising the master's thesis and physics seminar (FO, 60 ECTS).
The minimum requirements add up to 110 ECTS, The remainder can be fulfilled by TV, EV, PW or NW courses. The abbreviations can be found in the course listings and refer to the examination regulations. The official version is available only in German. For further questions please contact Prof. U. Katz. Students beginning their master studies in the winter term 2018/19 or later may choose specialisation topics. The topics and the applicable courses are listed below under separate headings. Further courses are offered under the headings "Elective courses in physics" (PW) and "Seminars for physics students" (PS). If you are interested in one of these courses offered in German, you may ask the lecturer whether the course could be taught in English. In addition, you might take elective courses (NW) in natural sciences (outside of physics), engineering and preclinical medicine. Additionally, certain courses in economics may be chosen. Students with a native tongue other than English can accredit English language courses as NW modules, and students with a native tongue other than German can accredit German language courses. This requires an initial assessment by the FAU language center; the course taken must correspond to the resulting recommendation. A maximum of 5 ECTS from language courses may be used for the Master's examination. General Courses (Advanced Theory, Experimental Physics, Lab Courses)

Complementary slides and written summaries of the lectures will be available online via the studon portal. The exercise class will be held live online.
This course will discuss the basic photophysical processes involved in and following the optical excitation of materials. Experimental techniques will be introduced to characterize these processes, which involve the optical absorption of light, the subsequent energetic carrier relaxation, phototransport, and carrier recombination. The functionality and performance of a large number of optoelectronic components, such as solar cell absorbers, photodetectors, or emitter materials for light-emitting diodes, rely on different combinations of these steps. While they can, in principle, be observed in a large variety of condensed-matter systems, their dynamics differ strongly between bulk direct and indirect band semiconductors, (quantum) confined systems, or materials with strong carrier localization, which can arise from exciton or polaron formation. The spectroscopic and time-resolved techniques, which are commonly applied to characterize the responses of these different systems to photoexcitation, will be introduced. These include both optical and electron spectroscopy techniques.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging 1 [MRI1] -
- Lecturers:
- Frederik Laun, Andreas Maier, Armin Nagel
- Details:

Weitere Angebote im UnivIS unter Schlüsselqualifikationen."C1 English vocabulary and usage for physics", run via the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern (VHB). This course is an exercise based online course designed to expand students' range of scientific vocabulary for use in written and spoken English, as well as improving accuracy and correcting several of the common errors, which we see/hear in their English language writing and presentations. The course can be taken entirely online, with the sole exception of a single 90 minute written examination at the end of the semester (in Erlangen) for those wishing to receive a certificate and ECTS points for completing the course.
