Fields of study
WPF LSE-MA ab 1 (ECTS-Credits: 5,0)

ECTS information:
Title:
Immune Biotechnology

Credits: 5,0

Prerequisites
Recommended:
  • Basic knowledge in immunology (e.g. through Bachelor course MBT of LSE)

  • Previous courses on bioprocess engineering and genetic engineering

Contents
  • Immune system revision: immune reaction, cellular and humoral adaptive and innate immune defence system
  • Process pipelines for antibody (AB) production: polyclonal, monoclonal, recombinant Abs, biosystems and bioreactor

  • Downstream processing of Abs

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic AB formulations

  • Vaccine Technologies

  • Genetic immune modulation technologies Crspr/Cas9

  • Manipulation of immune cells and host immune mediators for targeted therapies in Personalized Medicine, e.g. in cancer, HIV, auto-immune disease, malaria, leukaemia

  • Organ transplantation: organ rejection through immune incompatibilities, immune-suppression, biotechnology strategies

  • Recombinant production of immune-modulatory signaling molecules

  • New trends in diagnostic immune-technologies (e.g. label-free point-of-care systems, blood analyser, etc.)

  • Nano-immuno-technology

Educational objectives and skills:
Students shall

  • learn and understand the concepts of innate versus adaptive immune reaction

  • comprehend ways to manipulate immune system reaction through humoral and cellular means

  • embrace the relationship between genetic diversity and immunological compatibility and be able to depict strategies for genetic manipulation to enforce such compatibility

  • be able to understand the concept of Personalized Medicine in designing tailored immune-strategies for selected diseases and name strategies to target immune cells, cancer cells and pathogens

  • be able to critically evaluate the technological advances over the individual benefits and risks associated with immune biotechnology approaches

Literature
  • Literature recommendations will be available through the lecture slide references
  • Since the field is a young an actively developing field, there are not many text-books available!
