  • Hydrodynamics of microfluidic systems

  • Capillary effects: surface-tension driven flows

  • Emulsions and droplet formation

  • Diffusion and mixing: micromixers

  • Electrohydrodynamics: Electroosmosis & Electrophoresis

  • Thermal transfers: microexchangers

  • Simulation and modelling of microflows

The students who successfully take this module should:

  • understand the physics of fluid flow at the micro-scale

  • assess the viability of miniaturizing a fluid mehcanical process

  • have an overview of microfluidic applications and devices

  • know how to generate droplets in a microdevice

  • assess the efficiency of a micromixer

  • know how to drive fluid and separate particles with an electric field

  • model and simulate microflows

  • understand challenges towards nanofluidics
