The traditional role of the CIO is changing. Nevertheless many organizations tend to retain a narrow view of the C-level member: the CIO as gatekeeper of technology and protector of corporate information assets activities – centered on infrastructure and costs. Looking at the development of IT budgets, they were relatively stable over the last years, whereas more and more IT investments are undertaken on the business side (e.g. sales or marketing). How to evaluate the status quo and the current development of a CIO organization? This course is focusing on the role of IT function within organizations and the challenges of a modern CIO. The course is intended to provide insights into current topics and the role, duties and responsibilities of a CIO.
Extract of topics:
  • Characteristics and design of the CIO function

  • Development of the CIO role

  • The CIO as business partner

  • Managing IT costs

  • The CIO Agenda

Students are provided with an introduction (knowledge transfer), followed by case studies or project examples to gain deeper insights into the topic (knowledge application). Students have to work in teams on a selected topic and present the results to the audience.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • understand the role and duties of a CIO;

  • recognize the role of the IT-unit within an organization;

  • understand IT at a managerial level;

  • evaluate selected topics from the CIO Agenda standpoint;

  • analayze operational consequences of IT.
