Migration is a key issue of the 21st century: More people than ever are leaving their homes because of work, violence, climate change or a lack of future options. The issues of migration differ in the various contexts and are always challenging the societies and cultures involved. Questions of identity and values arise on the different spheres of society and are transforming them. Due to this, churches and theology have to face the issues of migration – especially, on a fundamental-ethical level: How can the different challenges of migration be described and analyzed from a theological-ethical perspective? What are the underlying conflicts, assumptions, notions and beliefs of society, culture and solidarity? What role do specific places and spaces play in the context of the challenges and transformations posed by migration?
In the course of the seminar, we will discuss these questions from a theological perspective by focusing on theories of spaces and different approaches of public theology. Thereby, we will focus on spatial and local circumstances in particular, e.g. borders and places of migration.

Seminar plan:
The seminar consists of two parts:

  • Seminar Day:

In a first part, the participants will be introduced to public theology, theories of spaces and the issues of migration within a seminar day on Saturday, September 21st, 2019 in Erlangen.

  • Participation in the Consultation of the GNPT, September 23rd–26th, 2019 in Bamberg:

In a second part, we will participate in the consultation of the Global Network for Public Theology (GNPT) on “Space and Place: Theological Perspectives on Living in the World” from Monday, September 23rd–Thursday, September 26th, 2019 in Bamberg.
Although participants are allowed to join the entire consultation, only a few lectures and sessions are mandatory for passing the seminar. The specific dates will be announced when the program of the consultation is published.

The seminar is an excellent opportunity to get a taste of theological conferences and theology in an international setting!
