Contents
The number of people forced to migrate continues to grow at an alarming pace. Globally, there are about 70.8 million forcibly displaced people, according to latest figures of UNHCR - the UN refugee agency. Of this, 41.3 million are internally displaced people, 25.9 million are refugees, and 3.5 million are asylum seekers. As migration and displacement of people have increased, so has media coverage. In this seminar we will examine media coverage and address questions, such as:
  • Information, misinformation and disinformation;

  • Communication rights;

  • Media Monitoring;

  • Community media and digital communications initiatives by migrants and refugees;

  • Media Ethics.

The course will also give an overview of current international legal frameworks and explore specific global situations, such as the situation at the US-Mexican Border or the Mediterranean Sea Rescue initiatives and recent geo-political developments. Course participants will engage with a number of practitioners in the field.
