Prerequisites / Organisational information
Regular participation is obligatory. Course credit certificates will be obtained by a presentation and a seminary paper; the seminary paper (25 pages) is either submitted in this course or in the complementary course offered by Prof. Demmelhuber Module: Non-European regions (AER), MA-program Registration via e-mail: ulrike.frank@fau.de, registration no later than 2020-10-03

Contents
The course is dealing with nationalism, its symbols and discourses in three countries: Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon. All three countries, diverging in terms of stability, have witnessed considerable efforts to establish a modern nationhood, allowing them to participate in a global modernity. The course is trying to cover the differences between these three cases as well as the relations between them.
