Contents
Hollywood – the name itself highly iconic and almost mythical – is both a geographical and a symbolic center in much of American fiction since the early 20th century. A neighborhood of Los Angeles and the home of the American film industry, Hollywood evokes stardom and glamor, success and wealth. The Hollywood novel typically portrays the lives of individuals who become part of Hollywood’s culture industry, yet, it often claims to focus on the behind-the-scenes stories we do not see on the big screen. In this vein, it also examines the dark underside of the star cult and the often-tragic fates of people who work in and around “the dream factory.”
The seminar offers an overview of the Hollywood novel as genre and formula – from Nathaniel West’s The Day of the Locust (1939, one of the first Hollywood novels) and Joan Didion’s Play It As It Lays (1970) to Jackie Collins’ popular classic Hollywood Wives (1983) and, most recently, Stewart O’Nan’s West of Sunset (2015) and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2021, which we will read in excerpts). In addition, we will also look at visual renderings of the Hollywood-setting in film, television series as well as song lyrics.

Recommended literature
Nathaniel West, The Day of the Locust (Penguin paperback)
Jackie Collins, Hollywood Wives
Stewart O’Nan, West of Sunset
