Short Stories can be considered as very popular in order to teach elements of literature in the FLC.
Stories of Initiation are pieces of fiction in which the protagonist undergoes a life-changing experience. Quite often the main character is a young person (child or adolescent) who has to deal with a confusing or even disturbing incident (e.g. death, failure, shattering of ideals).
This course aims at discussing and analyzing different short stories and stories of initiation and their potential advantages/disadvantages.

Recommended literature
We will have a closer look at texts written by Washington Irving, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Dorothy Parker, Sarah Orne Jewitt and Julie Orringer (just to name a few). A reading list and further material will be provided in class.
