Contents
This seminar provides an introduction into literary studies; it offers a broad and practically oriented survey of basic methods, key concepts, and analytical terminology. Students read and discuss introductory texts and cover literary examples of poetry, dramatic, and prose texts. The class is designed to introduce to and practice the use of terminology and analytic reading skills. It addresses questions such as: what is literature and who decides what belongs to that category? What does literary criticism entail and how did literary studies develop and change through time? What is a "canon" and how do we work critically with categories of literary history? (This class takes most of its sample texts from North American literature but does not require or automatically result in a specialization).
