- In this course we will trace the myth of the American West from the 18th century through its recent reapparition in the neo-Western genre in movies like True Grit and TV series like Deadwood. Concepts like the frontier and westward expansion will be analyzed, as well as their depiction in (autobiographical and fictional) literature and popular culture. In scrutinizing a variety of texts and films as well as series, we will pay special attention to the depiction of the inhabitants of this cultural space, namely the various groups of settlers, women, natives and other ethnic minorities, but also to the representation of change and loss that came along with the closing of the frontier.
Please note that there will be a block session on Saturday November 11, 2017.
