Contents
From political tractates, manifestos, and legal documents to newspaper articles and essays to novels, poems and plays: The United States have been and continue to be (re-)assessed, (re-)imagined, and (re-)appropriated via a broad range of texts from many different perspectives. In this seminar, we will look at some 21st-century examples to scrutinize how the U.S. as a nation is being (re-)written after the end of the so-called American Century. How do these texts construct the United States, what is their take on the ‘American Project’? What other (earlier) texts and ideas do they revisit and to what ends? What importance do major historical events like 9/11 and the Third Gulf War have? These and other questions will occupy us throughout the semester.
