Time and place: Mon 10:00 - 12:00, C 303

Contents
In this course, we will discuss key texts in/on U.S.-American culture and civilization from 1492 to the present. We will look at the way the “new world” has been represented as a paradise, wilderness, and melting pot, as a space for individual and collective expansion (American Dream, self-made man, frontier), as a political utopia (independence, myth of the founding fathers) and as an ostensibly classless society (“We are all middle class”). We will also discuss more critical versions of America regarding the position of women, ethnic groups, and the history and legacy of hegemony and imperial strife.
