This seminar is for those students specializing in American Studies, General Studies, or Cultural Studies who need credits in a "kulturwissenschaftliches Proseminar bzw. Mittelseminar".

Contents
Within the framework of the transnational turn of American Studies, this seminar seeks to explore some of the recent historic geopolitical tensions in the Western Hemisphere. During the last decades of the Cold War, Latin America was often perceived and referred to as “America’s backyard;” this seminar will critically look at the involvement of the U.S. in the region, specifically in regards to its role supporting right wing military dictatorships in South America, Central America and the Caribbean between the Johnson and Reagan administrations. We will analyze cultural products such as films, songs and live performances which were produced and performed during this timeframe in both Latin America and the U.S.
