Cities in nineteenth-century Britain grew tremendously. The growth of urban areas brought about far-reaching cultural and social changes. In this seminar, we will examine literary and seemingly non-literary texts as well as visual material. We will analyse how the diversity of Victorian cities and urban life are represented in discourses of class, gender and race. In doing so, we will approach the texts by means of basic analytic strategies which are prevalent in literary and cultural studies and which can also be applied to other fields of study.Students wishing to participate in this seminar are expected to acquire a copy of A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Books and read Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” before the beginning of the semester. Visual material and extracts from Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor will be available via StudOn.
