Contents
Over the centuries, British popular culture has produced a number of heroes. While some have faded from view, others have become intrinsically connected to imagined notions of 'Britishness'. In this seminar we will focus on such heroes, also referred to as cultural myths. We will start by considering different definitions of the terms 'hero' and 'myth' as well as (fictional) characters that have been or may be characterised as such. We will then analyse the representation of different cultural myths, including the Doctor (Doctor Who) and Sherlock Holmes, in both fiction and film. Special attention will be placed on issues of gender (especially masculinity), class and identity. Further, we will explore the function of these hero figures in relation to imagined notions of British cultural identity. Our reading will include A Study in Scarlet (1887) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and "Nothing O'Clock" (2013) by Neil Gaiman. We will also watch selected episodes of the BBC series Doctor Who and Sherlock. Basic knowledge of the series is required to participate in the seminar.
