- 'To be, or not to be: that is the question', 'Something is rotten in the state of Denmark', 'Murder most foul, as in the best it is' - even if you haven't read or watched Shakespeare's Hamlet yet, you will most likely be familiar with these lines. If you want to find out what exactly these lines refer to, how they can be interpreted and why they are still so influential today, this may be the right seminar for you. Placing the play in various cultural contexts of the early modern period, the first third of this seminar will devoted to a detailed act-by-act analysis of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Engaging with the vibrant field of adaptation studies, we will then move on to stage and screen adaptations of the play. The second half of the seminar will be devoted to a discussion of diverse postmodern, postcolonial and feminist appropriations of Hamlet by playwrights and authors such as Tom Stoppard, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie and Graham Swift. We will also consider responses to Hamlet in popular culture. Please note that this seminar contains a particularly heavy reading load - avid readers will have the most rewarding seminar experience.
Please purchase and read the Arden edition of Hamlet (see below) over the summer so that you have a solid overview of the play and its major contexts before our course starts.
Due to the pandemic this seminar will be taught online. Most weeks will consist of synchronous sessions on Zoom in combination with some asynchronous learning activities on StudOn.
