Prerequisites / Organisational information
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all winter term classes will be taught online.

The Proseminar/Mittelseminar Linguistics belongs to the following modules in the indicated degree programs:

  • BA English and American Studies: Zwischenmodul II Linguistics. (Requirements: completed Zwischenmodul I: Thematisches Kombinationsmodul)

  • Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien: Zwischenmodul L-GYM Linguistics. (Requirements: completed Basismodul Linguistics)

  • Lehramt Englisch an Grund-, Haupt- und Realschulen: Seminarmodul L-UF Linguistics. (Requirements: completed Elementarmodul Linguistics)

Requirements: presentation and written assignment

Contents
In this seminar we will focus on the sounds of the English language. We will learn how to describe the sounds of English and how to transcribe words and sentences. We will deal with pronunciation dictionaries as well as questions like: How do children learn pronunciation, what kind of processes are at work in connected speech, which accents there are in English and how you can describe these accents? The discussion of historical, contrastive and gender aspects of English sounds will also be part of this seminar.
