- This course is meant to deepen and practice (text)analytical skills and categories acquired in the course of your previous studies. In order to do so, we will study various (mainly canonical) examples of English literature from different centuries covering the three major genres. In this context, we will also consider questions concerning the development of these genres as well as examples of subgenres.
Studying texts intensively in preparation for as well as in class is a basic prerequisite for this course and expected of all participants. This course entails a relatively heavy reading load – please start reading the longer texts (see below) during term break!
- Recommended literature
- William Shakespeare, Othello (please buy the Arden edition or a comparable academic edition)
Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest
Harold Pinter, The Birthday Party
Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (please make sure that your edition is not abridged!)
John Fowles, The French Lieutenant’s Woman
Other mandatory reading will be provided via StudOn by the beginning of the semester.
