Contents
The discussion of 'black Britishness' and 'black British writing' has accumulated a long backstory in British postcolonial discourse and British literary history ever since the mid-20th century. In this course, we will explore a broad range of writers usually coined 'black British': Nigerian Chinua Achebe; Trinidad-born Sam Selvon; Nigerian Ben Okri; Kittian-British Caryl Phillips; and Nigerian-born Helen Oyeyemi. We will discuss four novels and a short-story collection that cover a wide geographical as well as thematic scope, moving from Nigeria to Lagos and London, and from the West Indies to Dover, and touch upon colonial, post-colonial and neo-colonial issues as well as questions of genre and story-telling in the process (the post-colonial short story, the London novel, post-modernism and post-colonial gothic).
Please note that attending this course entails a comparatively heavy reading load - students are therefore expected to start reading during the semester break. You should have finished reading at least Things Fall Apart and Moses Ascending by the beginning of term.

Recommended literature
  • Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart (1958)
  • Sam Selvon, Moses Ascending (1975)

  • Ben Okri, Stars of the New Curfew (1988)

  • Caryl Phillips, Cambridge (1991)

  • Helen Oyeyemi, White Is for Witching (2009)

Other mandatory reading will be provided via StudOn by the beginning of the semester.
