Contents
This course will make you more familiar with earlier stages of English: We will be reading and translating texts from Old to Early Modern English, and discuss them from linguistic, cultural, and literary perspectives. The first half of the course (Monday 12:15-13:00), "Communicative patterns from the past", focuses primarily on texts interesting from a pragmatic point of view; it also serves as the Begleitübung to the Hauptseminar English Historical Pragmatics for students in the programmes MA English Studies and MA Linguistik.
The second half of the course (Monday 13:00-13:45) will be dedicated more generally to key texts from the Old and Middle English period. It is aimed at students of Lehramt Englisch an Gymnasien who have completed an introduction to Old or Middle English and are planning to choose Old or Middle English in the Staatsexamen Englische Linguistik. We will read and translate texts featuring in the corpus from which the Staatsexamen texts are taken (Chaucer, Aelfric, Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, etc.)
Participants will prepare excerpts of the texts every week, which we will then discuss in the seminar.
Due to the Corona situation, the seminar will take place online, using Zoom and StudOn. Further information will follow in due course.
