Contents
We talk and listen to other people talk a lot. We have hundreds of conversations every week and, when these spoken exchanges are in our native language (L1), understanding what is being said seems natural and effortless. However, listening to speech entails carrying out many cognitive tasks very quickly and accurately, like tracking information to find the boundaries between words and evaluating probabilities based on the structure of the native vocabulary and the input received. Considering this, in the first part of the course, we will focus on the mechanisms that allow us to understand speech so effectively in our L1. We will discuss the main characteristics of spoken language (vs. written language), outline the main stages involved in speech perception, and examine how words are recognized and how they are extracted from larger speech chunks (i.e., sentences). In the second part of the course, we will shift our focus to the task of understanding speech in a non-native language (L2), which, in contrast to the L1, can be very demanding (as anybody who has spent a significant amount of time in an L2-speaking country knows). There, we will review the additional difficulties that non-native speakers face when trying to locate L2 words in the speech stream and access the correct conceptual representations for these words, and reflect on what it takes for them to overcome these difficulties.

Evaluation: homework + final written assignment
