- The course consists of 2 sessions of 2 hours per week. All 4 hours must be attended in one semester.
Entry requirement: placement test result "Level 1" OR Level 0 English Preparation Course completed
- Inhalt:
- Introduction to Basic Academic English can be counted towards the UNIcert II exam and is an integrated language course covering grammar revision and consolidation, vocabulary expansion, oral, listening and writing skills.
Es wird empfohlen, im Zuge des Studiums einer Fremdsprache einmal die Übung "Kickstart: Fremdsprachen lernen" (auf UNIVIS unter Sprachenzentrum > Sprachbezogene Zusatzqualifikationen in Erlangen) zu besuchen.

Studierende, die im Einstufungstest weniger als Level 2 erreicht haben, dürfen im folgenden Fall ebenfalls an diesem Kurs teilnehmen:
ANWESENHEIT
Um diesen Kurs erfolgreich abzuschließen ist eine regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme erforderlich. Im kurs besteht daher Anwesenheitspflicht. Wie oft Sie im Unterricht fehlen dürfen, und welche Leistungen Sie während des Kurses erbringen müssen um zur Abschlussprüfung zugelassen zu werden, erfahren Sie in der ersten Sitzung. Beachten Sie bitte, dass u.U. nicht alle prüfungsrelevanten Kursmaterialien über StudOn zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Die Teilnehmer sind selber verantwortlich, versäumte Sitzungen selbständig nachzuholen, fehlende Kursmaterialien zu besorgen, und Pflichtaufgaben ggf. nachzureichen. PRÜFUNG
Die Abschlussklausur (schriftliche Prüfung, 90 Minuten) findet für alle Gruppen am Samstag, 9. Juli 2016 statt. Raum und Uhrzeit entnehmen Sie bitte dem Terminplan für die Abschlussklausuren, die ca. 4 Wochen nach Kursbeginn auf StudOn veröffentlicht wird. Eine Prüfungsanmeldung über mein campus ist erforderlich (Anmeldezeitraum: Montag, 23.05.2016 (0.01 Uhr) bis Freitag, 10.06.2016 (12.00 Uhr)). Die Prüfungsnummer ist 30153. LEISTUNGSNACHWEIS
Studierende, die diesen Kurs erfolgreich abschließen, erfüllen die Mindestanforderung der Prüfungsordnung (Nachweis der Fremdsprachenkompetenz) und erhalten eine entsprechende Bescheinigung zur Vorlage beim Landesjustizprüfungsamt, sofern diese noch nicht aufgrund einer bestandenen Prüfung in einer anderen Sprache ausgestellt wurde. WIEDERHOLUNGSMÖGLICHKEIT / FOLGEN EINER NICHT BESTANDENEN PRÜFUNG
Dieser Kurs wird jedes Semester angeboten. Eine nicht bestandene Prüfung muss wiederholt werden. Teilnehmer, die die Note 5,0 bekommen (= weniger als 50% der Punkte), müssen den gesamten Kurs wiederholen. Teilnehmer, die die Note 4,7 erreichen (= mindestens 50% der Punkte), dürfen - im Ermessen des Kursleiters / der Kursleiterin - die Prüfung zum nächsten regulären Termin (am Samstag, 4. Februar 2017) wiederholen, ohne den Kurs noch mal besuchen zu müssen. Teilnehmer müssen in diesem Fall unbedingt ihre(n) Kursleiter(in) kontaktieren, um die nicht-bestandene Prüfung einzusehen und zu besprechen. Wird die Prüfung in solchen Fällen nicht zum nächsten Termin abgelegt, muss danach der gesamte Kurs wiederholt werden. Eine Wiederholung zur Notenverbesserung ist ausgeschlossen.
- Inhalt:
- Der Kurs bietet den Teilnehmern eine Einführung in das anglo-amerikanische Rechtssystem, fördert den Erwerb grundlegender juristischer Fachterminologie, und vermittelt das entsprechende juristische Fachwissen.
Die Hauptthemen, mit denen sich die Kursteilnehmer beschäftigen werden, beziehen sich hauptsächlich auf Großbritannien und die USA, wobei andere englischsprachige Länder nicht ausgeschlossen werden. Die Teilnehmer werden die wesentlichen Fachbegriffe aus Themenbereichen wie z.B. die Gerichte, die juristischen Berufe, Rechssystem und Verfassungsrecht erlernen. Rechtsvergleichend werden dabei in englischer Sprache auch verwandte Themen aus dem deutschen oder dem europäischen Recht behandelt. Der Kurs besteht aus 5 Einheiten:

5. The Electoral System & the UK Constitution

- Inhalt:
- In this class you will be offered the opportunity to gain confidence in speaking English through speaking English.
The emphasis will be on making you more comfortable in speaking English and your tutor’s aim will be rather to help you with vocabulary and pronunciation and with the rhythm and stress of the language than to demand strict grammatical accuracy.
The topics for discussion will range from subjects of general interest to the more academic.
Some of these topics will be chosen by your tutor but you will also be asked to speak about your own particular areas of interest or to research subjects of interest to you so that you can share the gathered information with the other members of the class.
Your grade will be based on:
Your performance in class Your recorded, spoken answers to a range of questions which will be posed to you automatically in the language lab. A listening comprehension done in class.

- Inhalt:
- This course is designed to give students a first opportunity to focus entirely on improving their writing skills. Its main objective is to give students an introduction into academic writing. The types of writing discussed in this course include emails, paragraphs, summaries of English texts, cover letters for academic applications, as well as creative writing. The input will mainly come from academic and journalistic sources. The exam will consist of continuous assessment as well as a final exam.

Please be aware that not all materials relevant for the exam will necessarily be posted on StudOn and that participants are responsible for making sure that they catch up on any missed classes, acquire any additional materials and complete and/or submit any compulsory tasks. ASSESSMENT
The final exam consists of a 90 minute written examination (approximately 80% of the grade) and a 60 minute listening exam (approximately 20%). The written exam will take place on Saturday, 9th July 2016 (time and room will be made known in the exam timetable which will be published shorty after the course starts) and the listening exam will take place during class time towards the end of the course. Registration for the exam via mein campus is necessary (registration period: Monday, 23rd May (00:01) - Friday, 10th June (12:00)). The exam number is 30154. REPEATING THE COURSE
We expect to offer this course again in the winter semester 2016/2017. Students who fail the exam and wish to retake it may do so at the end of the next semester without having to retake the whole course, providing they obtain the grade 4,7. Students who fail with the grade 5,0 must retake the whole course before being allowed to attempt the exam again. - Inhalt:
- The law of obligations is the term used to group together two distinct fields of law: the law of torts and contract law.
This course focuses on the acquisition of the core legal terminology used in these two fields by learning about the fundamental legal principles in these areas. In addition to that, you will discover what procedures are involved in taking a civil case to court and the terminology employed in civil procedural law. The course will place equal weighting on all the four language learning skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

procedures involved in bringing a criminal case to trial, the trial
itself, the rules of evidence and how offenders are sentenced. Students
will then study the basic concepts of substantive criminal law by looking at the elements of a crime, specific offences against property and crimes against the person and possible defences, as well as the language used in this field.
The course will place equal weighting on all of the four language learning skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

- Inhalt:
- Private Law A covers three separate areas of private law: company and commercial law, intellectual property and competition law.
In company and commercial law you will look at the formation of companies, consider the differences between German, English and American corporate structures, learn and use
company-related vocabulary and terminology, discover
what commercial law encompasses and the laws which govern it, and
consider when relevant legislation such as the Sale of Goods Act (UK), the Uniform Commercial Code (USA) and the the European Convention on Contracts for the Sale of Goods (CISG) come into play. Intellectual property covers the various protection rights such as copyright, patents, design rights and trademarks. You will look at these in the context of the commercial areas which they influence and consider some of the issues surrounding the protection of these rights through legislation and case law. Competition law deals with the objectives of legal protection and the different areas of regulation concerning anti-competitive behaviour, also considering the relationship which exists between competition and IP law. You will identify the legislative instruments used to regulate anti-competitive behaviour in various jurisdictions and learn and utilise the legal terminology associated with this field of law. The course will place equal weighting on all the four language learning skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

- Private Law B covers four separate areas of private law: inheritance law, family law, employment law and property law.
1. In inheritance law you will look at what happens to a person’s property upon that person’s death, what is required for a will to be valid, the different legal approaches when a person dies with/without leaving a will, and learn and use related terminology in this field of law. An examination and comparison of the relevant legislative instruments used in both England and Germany is also covered together with cross -boarder issues. 2. Family law covers the law relating to family matters and you will be examining this in the context of marriage, divorce, parental responsibility and the rights of children. You will examine the courts which have family law jurisdiction and the legislation which guides them, as well as relevant case law in this area. 3. Employment law deals with the rights and obligations of employers and employees before, during and at the termination of employment, the tribunal system in the UK, considers the various anti-discrimination legislation in the EU, England and Germany, and covers the terminology used in this area of law. 4. Property law encompasses the laws concerning the acquisition, sharing and protection of valuable assets in England and Wales. You will look at this in the context of the four areas which fall into this field of law; land law, also known as ‘real property’, trust law, personal property and intellectual property, as well as learn and utilise topic specific terminology. - This course concentrates primarily on spoken formal and legal English in a number of situations: orally presenting academic papers and case summaries, leading the ensuing discussion therefrom and preparing a case for a short mooting exercise, a simulated court case during which the course participants will assume the role of one of the lawyers in the proceedings.
The aim of the course is to improve the oral fluency of the participants’ English with regard to higher register language and to instill them with a great deal more confidence with regard to presenting legal issues in English. The course will build upon the lexis and substantive law attained in the level 3 (JUR) specialised courses and should ideally be taken after the level 4 (JUR) course ‘Legal Writing and Drafting’.
Assessment will be based upon a number of compulsory presentations and the final moot court hearings.

- This course will help students to improve their English language skills in various fields of the law by confronting them with situations in which they will be required to switch effectively and quickly between
German and English.
In the context of written texts, students will be expected to translate legal documents from and, in particular, into English. In addition to this, students will undertake interpreting exercises in which they will be expected to act as a linguistic mediator between a German-speaking party and an English-speaking party. The aim of the course is thus to practise the vocabulary acquired in the level 2 and level 3 courses in a situation where time is of the essence.

Dieser Kurs gehört zu den Zusatzqualifikationen für Referendare in Nürnberg und wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bayerischen Staatsministerium der Justiz und für Verbraucherschutz angeboten und
vom Freistaat Bayern bezuschusst. Teilnehmer sollen gute allgemeine Englischkenntnisse besitzen, Vorkenntnisse des englischen Rechts und der juristischen Fachsprache sind jedoch nicht zwingend erforderlich. Der Kurs bietet Gelegenheit, eventuell während des Studiums erworbene Fachsprachkenntnisse zu vertiefen, sowie neue zu erwerben.
- Inhalt:
- Es werden u.a. folgende juristische Themen behandelt: Die juristischen Berufe, der Zivilprozess, Verträge und Vertragsrecht, Gesellschaftsrecht, Recht des geistigen Eigentums, Arbeitsrecht. Alle vier Sprechfertigkeiten (Lesen, Schreiben, Hören, Sprechen) werden geübt.
Neben der Vermittlung der juristischen Terminologie und juristisches Wissens liegt die Betonung auf der praxis-relevanter Kommunikation und der aktiven Verwendung der juristischen Fachsprache. Um diese zu trainieren, werden die Teilnehmer z.B. Situationen aus dem juristischen Alltag (Verhandlungen, Mandantenschreiben, Vertragsformulierungen, in einer Sitzung Notizen machen usw.) durchspielen.

- Inhalt:
- This course has been conceptualized primarily for Industrial Engineering (IP) and Mechanical Engineering students who are currently at the C1 level. Here, students will hone their English skills predominately in speaking, but also in reading and writing. The speaking goals are to increase explanatory, elaborative competencies, to increase fluency, and to reduce residual accent. Further, mock-interviews are held to practice interviews in English. For written competencies, students will learn how to write a CV and cover letter for job application purposes. Finally, vocabulary and idiomatic language acquisition are cornerstones of this course.
Es wird empfohlen, im Zuge des Studiums einer Fremdsprache einmal die Übung "Kickstart: Fremdsprachen lernen" (auf UNIVIS unter Sprachenzentrum > Sprachbezogene Zusatzqualifikationen in Erlangen) zu besuchen.

Um diesen Kurs erfolgreich abzuschließen ist eine regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme erforderlich. Aus diesem Grund besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Welche Leistungen Sie während des Kurses erbringen müssen, und wieviele Termine Sie maximal versäumen dürfen, um zur Abschlussprüfung zugelassen zu werden, erfahren Sie in der ersten Sitzung. Beachten Sie bitte, dass u.U. nicht alle prüfungsrelevanten Kursmaterialien über StudOn zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Die Teilnehmer sind selber verantwortlich, versäumte Sitzungen selbständig nachzuholen, fehlende Kursmaterialien zu besorgen, und Pflichtaufgaben ggf. nachzureichen. PRÜFUNG
In diesem Kurs gibt es keine Abschlussprüfung. In die Endnote gehen eine Präsentation, ein in Gruppen erarbeitetes "Company File", das Ergenis eines Hör- und Leseverständnistests, sowie Punkte für die aktive Teilnahme am Unterricht ein. Die Leistungen müssen während des Semesters erbracht werden, die Termine und Fristen werden zu Beginn des Kurses bekannt gegeben. Eine Prüfungsanmeldung über mein campus ist zwingend erforderlich (Anmeldezeitraum: Montag, 23. Mai (00:01) bis Freitag, 10. Juni (12 Uhr)). - Inhalt:
- The objective of this course is to develop and broaden students' business communication skills using a variety of tasks and project work.
Tasks include investment requests, dealing with complaints, "CSR statements" and mission statements to help develop the students’ use of tone and style in writing as well as writing appropriately for the audience and to achieve the desired goal.
Students will be asked to choose a business idea for which they will seek investment and to this end prepare a company file during the course which will count substantially towards the final grade.

- In diesem Kurs steht im Vordergrund die Vermittlung von juristischen Inhalten der anglo-amerikanischen Rechtssyteme und der dazugehörenden juristischen Fachsprache. Es werden verschiedene wesentliche Themenbereiche im Überblick behandelt (Grundzüge des anglo-amerikanischen Rechts, der Zivilprozess, Schuldrecht, Handels- und Gesellschaftsrecht, Recht des geistigen Eigentums).
