Texture Synthesis

Virtual worlds in current games and movies have a insatiable demand for texture detail. Creating all textures manually is prohibitive.
Example based texture synthesis seems like an ideal approach to address this issue: The artists paints a small example texture and the system synthesizes it across arbitrary large surfaces.
Texture synthesis has been a very active research area in the past and while it is considered a solved problem, working texture synthesis products have not yet arrived on the market. Two major reasons for this are the ease of use for artists
  • most algorithms have many parameters to tweak for optimal results - and

scalability - most algorithms deal with mega-texels, while current movies easily require giga-texels per character.
