Volume estimation of the thyroid gland respectively of nodules in 3-D ultrasound data

The examination of the thyroid is usually done with a 2-D ultrasound probe. The volume of the thyroid can be estimated by the known formula: width x depth x length (in cm) x 0.5. Additionally two slices of the thyroid gland lobe are saved for each observed patient. On the one hand, this is user dependent, e.g. the choice of the stored slice by the physician, on the other hand it limits the plastically 3-D impression of the thyroid. The aim of this project is to automatically determine the volume of the thyroid lobe and to provide the extracted thyroid volume for follow-up studies. This can yield additional information about the course of disease. The methods should also be applied to nodular tissues inside the thyroid. Therefore, partial volumes of the thyroid gland are acquired with a 3-D ultrasound machine which contain the nodule. The processing pipeline includes: postprocessing, segmentation and classification of different structures, e.g. cyst.
