Fusion of 3-D volumetric data sets and 2-D fluoroscopic sequences for application in electro-physiology ablation procedures

The goal of our research is to develop a method to fuse three-dimensional volumetric data sets (CACT, CT, MRI) to two-dimensional fluoroscopic sequences as they are acquired during electro-physiology procedures. The targeted application of this method is atrial fibrillation which is treated by electrically isolation of the pulmonary veins attached to the left atrium. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained heart arrhythmia. In the USA, about six million people suffer from this disease. Atrial fibrillation usually goes with a higher risk for strokes and cardiac insufficiency, and is often associated with a higher cardio-vascular morbidity in general. The required user interaction to fuse a three-dimensional volumetric data set to two-dimensional fluoroscopic sequences needs to be integrated into the physician's workflow.

Our research focuses on:

  • Motion compensation during the ablation

  • Registration of a three-dimensional volumetric data set to

two-dimensional fluoroscopic sequences.
