The Chair of Computer Science 4 (Distributed Systems and Operating Systems) was founded in 1972. From 1972 until 2003 Prof. Dr. Fridolin Hofmann was head of the department.
In May 2002 he was joined by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Schröder-Preikschat. Teaching system programming, operating systems, distributed systems, advanced lectures on operating systems, middleware, system design, real time systems.
Focus of researchThe main area of research is best described by the term Operating Systems Engineering, i.e. the combination of operating systems and software engineering, especially for the design and development of distributed and embedded operating systems. Family-based software design forms the basis for the development of highly problem-specific solutions for embedded runtime and operating systems as well as for middleware.
The research covers basic questions concerning operating system architectures and the development of new operating system abstractions and mechanisms, meeting current computer and application requirements.
Another research focus is the prediction of non-functional properties (time and energy demand) of the system software by means of static and dynamic program analysis.
Adaptable operating system architectures and operating system families have been central research topics for many years now. The idea is to use the adaptability of operating system and communication system software to special application requirements as well as to the available hardware architecture to facilitate synergy effects between these different levels.
Another main area of research is the development of methods and techniques for the construction of a software infrastructure for embedded distributed systems. With the main objective being methods and tools allowing for the simple creation of a variety of different operating systems out of re-usable, architecture-independent components rather than a particular operating system architecture (e.g. micro-kernels). Possible areas of use range from operating systems and middleware for complex distributed general-purpose systems to embedded, distributed and parallel special-purpose systems and support for real-time operations of security-critical applications.
