Conodont Stratigraphy of the Carboniferous and Permian Strata from Brøggerhalvøya and the Billefjorden Trough The post-Svalbardian sediments of the Brøggerhalvøya and Billefjorden area were examined in detail and 356 samples were taken, of which 99 yielded at least one conodont element. The association of typical Mississippian and Early Pennsylvanian forms is evidence for the onset of sedimentation at the Early/Middle Carboniferous boundary. The mixed siliciclastic-calcareous sediments and the overlying carbonates contain conodonts which became extinct during the Early Permian crisis. Therefore, sedimentation took place during Late Carboniferous to very Early Permian. No conodonts were found in the Gipshuken Fm, which was deposited in a hypersaline environment. Our youngest conodont association was found at the base of the overlying Kapp Starostin Fm. Accordingly, the "post-hypersaline" transgression started during the middle Leonardian. | Projektleitung: Prof. Dr. Werner Buggisch
