- Contents
- This course first introduces students to the terminology and
procedures involved in bringing a criminal case to trial, the trial
itself, the rules of evidence and how offenders are sentenced. Students will then study the basic concepts of substantive criminal law by looking at the elements of a crime, specific offences against property and crimes against the person and possible defences, as well as the language used in this field.
The course consists of 3 units:
1. Pre-trial Criminal Procedure
2. The Criminal Trial & Sentencing
3. Substantive Criminal Law:
The course will cover all the four language learning skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Additional information for students who are interested in taking this course as an online / blended-learning course:
A grade of 2,3 or better in Introduction to English Legal Language or at least one other level 3 law course is required to take this course as an online / blended-learning course
Students who have already taken a blended learning course should ideally already have also taken at least one weekly course or be doing so this semester
Attendance is compulsory at all four classroom workshops, so please check the dates carefully!
The final (one hour) class on 29th January is an additional, optional (but strongly recommended) exam revision session
Students will work through most of the course materials independently using both online and printed materials. In the workshops students will have the opportunity to ask questions, clarify any points they are unsure about, and use the vocabulary and knowledge they have acquired in practical exercises.
