- Since the beginning of this century, mass demonstrations and protest movements have reached a new level both in Europe and beyond. Consequently, the contentious politics literature is mushrooming analysing both revolutions, protest incidents and democratisation movements. East Asia has seen quite a number of these protests – from the “People Power Movements” in the Philippines to the “Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong, from the Colour-Protests in Thailand to the BERSIH demonstrations in Malaysia. The seminar makes use of the contentious politics approach in order to understand the various protest episodes in East Asia. Based on a number of case studies and comparative cases, we try to get a better picture of what is moving East Asian societies and how governments respond. We also learn why protests succeed (or fail) and how authoritarian/democratic governments react to various protest forms.
