Contents
This course examines recent research on second language acquisition with a focus on multilingual and/or multicultural classrooms. The first part of the course will deal with theoretical issues on child second language acquisition (e.g., internal and external factors, the role of the first language(s), L1-transfer effects, input quality and quantity, language development in the course of multilingual language acquisition) and its interrelatedness to multiculturalism. The class will explore the topics in further depth using processes including brainstorming in bigger and smaller groups, group work, world café, questionnaires etc. The second part of the course will apply this knowledge to the second language classroom. Students will be required to prepare a single detailed lesson in group work which will be presented, analyzed and reflected on. The class will review and analyze videos from multicultural and multilingual teaching.
